Roll A Gnome Keep or Replace Gnomes
A decision framework so every roll either upgrades a tile or frees inventory — never clogs the bag forever.
Every Roll A Gnome session ends with the same question: keep or replace? Rarity badges shout; crop income whispers. This page turns that whisper into a rule you can run after every roll block and every harvest cycle.
The three-question filter
Ask in order:
- Does it beat my weakest planted worker on real tiles? If yes, place it — see Best Farming Gnomes
- Do I have a free tile or a clear downgrade to swap? If no, either expand for keepers (Expand Your Garden) or bank one spare only if inventory allows (Inventory Management)
- Is luck active so this sample even counts? If no, stop rolling and claim Free Luck Rewards
If you cannot answer these quickly, you are collecting trophies, not farming.
Rarity as a signal, not a verdict
Read Gnome Rarity Tiers for aspiration and Drop Rates & Odds for patience. Commons near 1 in 2 will dominate early plots. Ultra-rares near 1 in 9,999,999 are celebrations, not schedules. A mid rarity that raises sell totals after two cycles beats an unplanted chase piece.
Keep rules by account stage
Early game
Fill first. Replace only clear upgrades. Follow Early Game Build until sell cadence funds rolls without panic.
Mid game
Raise the median. Use Mid Game Progression and the Progression Planner so replacements target the weakest third of the plot, not random tiles.
Replace protocol (5 minutes)
- Sort planted team mentally from weakest to strongest
- Identify the bottom one or two tiles
- Harvest and sell once so you feel the baseline (Harvest and Sell)
- Swap in the candidate
- Run another harvest pass and compare
If the new worker is worse, swap back. Ego is expensive.
When to bank instead of plant
Bank only when:
- The gnome is close to your top farmers but every tile already holds equals
- You will expand within the next funded session
- Inventory still has reserved free slots for the next roll block
Otherwise recycle. Bags are hallways.
After the 2026-08-15 update window
Live metrics during the 16 Aug 2026 research pass sat near 3.65M visits, 5.8k concurrent, and 11k favorites. Economy or pool tweaks can change who deserves a tile overnight. Re-test keep rules after Patch Notes instead of defending yesterday’s roster forever.
Mistakes this framework prevents
- Hoarding every rare while commons do the work
- Replacing an entire plot after one dry roll block (Common Mistakes)
- Expanding to store trophies instead of keepers
- Rolling without a written keep floor (How to Roll Gnomes)
Pair with tools
- Luck Checklist before the block that creates new candidates
- Make Money Fast to fund swaps without draining the roll budget
- Offline Progress so the keepers you chose actually work overnight
Teaching keep-or-replace to friends
Have them write one sentence: “I replace any planted gnome that loses a sell cycle to a new worker.” Share Official Links so they are in the correct experience before copying your roster screenshots.
Sample keep card
- Floor: always plant anything that beats tile #worst
- Bank limit: one spare above floor if slots remain
- Recycle: everything else before the next roll block
- Review: after two harvest cycles or after any patch
Tape that card next to your roll UI. Consistency beats lore debates.
Edge cases
Duplicate farmers: keep the better-looking one only if sell totals match; otherwise pick one and free the slot. Cosmetic-only flex: if it does not plant better, it is not a keeper for progression — enjoy it in a bank slot you can afford, not on a productive tile. Automation filters: if you use auto-roll rarity filters, align them with this card or you will fill the bag with trophies the filter never taught you to plant — see Auto Roll Script.
Keep what earns. Replace what loses. Everything else is clutter with a rarity tag.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I keep every rare gnome in Roll A Gnome?
Only if it beats a planted worker or you have a funded plan to expand for it soon.
How do I know a replacement worked?
Compare sell totals across two harvest cycles before and after the swap.
What if inventory is full of maybes?
Stop rolling, place clear upgrades, recycle the rest, then resume with free slots.
